Prevernal
The last breath of winter.
The bottom of the exhale, holding still for a moment longer, waiting for spring to take the next breath.
The equinox is coming, and the days and nights are near equilibrium.
The sun is not at its highest point in the sky, and the angle of the light is gentler than what is to come during the long summer days.
The images in this selection were taken in March of 2025, in or around Capitol Reef National Park. The last exhale of winter.
Inner Glow
In a post-social media world, it's a bit hard to know how to share images. REAL photographers present portfolios, collections, or projects into highly curated galleries on professionally designed websites. The rest of us share images on sharing/social media websites like Flickr, Instagram, or (gag), Facebook. For a variety of reasons, I'm not sharing images on Instagram right now. (I'm basically waiting until there's a better option for photography and the local groups that I follow, then I can jetison it.)
I thought about the best way to put together this collection, and I got completely creatively stuck and jammed up on the word COLLECTION. That's what pros do, they CURATE COLLECTIONS and PORTFOLIOS. My pictures aren't at that level, and I don't know anything about curating a portfolio, and even if I did, I don't have years and years of images to put in a COLLECTION, let alone a PORTFOLIO.
All this pressure, all these definitions, so many paramenters that I was imposing on myself were keeping me from doing the editing, sitting down with the work of organizing some pictures into a…a what…Collection???..omg I can't I'm just not good enough.
And then I remembered, I'm not a pro. I don't even have to use these words, or maybe these words can mean something different to me. I can do this however I want to.
So instead of using those words that were loaded with meaning, even if I was the only one doing the loading with meaning, I decided to choose a different word. I thought about words I already use.
Concerto. Symphony. Sonata. Program. Recital. Suite.
SUITE. A set of movements often consisting of dances, sometimes including a prelude, connected by a key. (See also, JS Bach Suites for Solo Cello…)
And in this way, I was able to figure out how I wanted to put these pictures in an order, how to think about it, what to call it, and not how the imaginary jury of PROFESSIONALS in my brain thought I should.
I hope you enjoy this Suite of images, this set of dance movements that is connected by a key, a place and time of year. Click to view larger, or view on the Photography page.
